On The Ground at the Shell Pennzoil Grand Prix of Houston

First off, I want to apologize for the dearth of coverage from myself and Q4G regarding IndyCar.  First of all I had a gay divorce.  I know, I know…devastating.  I’m over it.  Next, my day job has been crazy.  I’ve spent a lot of time traveling, so the spare moments have been few and far between.  Lastly, I moved into a new place.  So between work trips, I spent my time packing and unpacking.  A fascinating 7 months to say the least.  So now, back to your regularly scheduled IndyCar programming.

I’m happy to report that as of the Pro Mazda practice this morning, the bump that plagued the first day, and pretty much the entire weekend last year, has been fixed.  Because of the date change from last year, the GP had more time to set up the track and make necessary repairs and changes from last year.  In 2013, the GP had a week to setup the track.  This year, they had roughly a month.  That extra preparation time has already been evident this weekend in the hour or so I’ve been here.  Things seem to be running much smoother and things more organized…like the media center.  So, big congratulations to the Grand Prix of Houston folks for learning from last year and improving the event for this year.

Weather could be a concern today for practice and tomorrow as well.  Due to the humidity and flow of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, there is roughly a 40% chance for afternoon showers and thunderstorms.  Don’t expect a total washout, but the chance of delays due to moisture are certainly possible if not expected.  The good news for the drivers, and fans, is the cloud cover will ease temperatures today and tomorrow with highs reaching 87 today and 89 tomorrow.  Sunday will be more of a concern as it is expected to be sunnier and 92.  IndyCar certainly dodged a bullet this year regarding the weather when summer temperatures are typically 95+.

It is also gay pride weekend in Houston!  The GP tweeted this picture yesterday of a rainbow over the track.  Is it because I’m here?  Is it because it’s pride weekend?  Or, is it a higher power granting us a safe weekend?  I say it’s all three.  So, if you’re in Houston this weekend, hop on over to the Montrose area Saturday night for some free entertainment.  You may not know, but Houston is a gay friendly, unique, and open city.  Even our mayor Annise Parker is an open lesbian who is married to her partner.  You certainly can’t get any more diverse than Houston!

Stay tuned for updates today and tomorrow form Q4G.  I won’t be on the ground on Sunday as I’ll be traveling for my vacation that’s next week.  However, I’ll keep you posted until then.

Thanks for reading!  You guys rock. :)
